Keele Railway Tunnel. North Staffordshire.

by admin · July 1, 2025

The Keele Tunnel in Staffordshire stretches 321 yards and is situated on the North Staffordshire Railway’s Stoke to Market Drayton Line. Constructed in 1859 using red brick, the tunnel follows a straight path and features masonry coping at both entrances. It includes several refuges on each side. Originally designed to accommodate twin tracks, it was converted to a single track configuration in October 1934 when the line was realigned to the centre. In 1962, a new chord was built at Madeley, linking the line to the West Coast Mainline. Freight traffic continued to use the tunnel until 1966, coinciding with the closure of the Creamery at Pipe Gate. Passenger services ended in 1964 as part of the Beeching cuts, but freight operations persisted, serving the Apedale and Silverdale Collieries. After these collieries shut down in 1998, the line was officially closed. Much of the track was removed in 2009, although some sections remain.
